What a Phizz-Whizzing Year for Celebrations

This week we celebrated Roald Dahl Day, when I say we I mean ‘we’ as a community of book lovers. Roald Dahl Day falls on 13th September every year, and is annually celebrated by schools, bookshops, libraries and individuals across the country. This year it was extra special as it also marked 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl himself.

In the current golden age of children’s literature we mark lots of days and nights that celebrate the love children and adults have for the books we are fascinated by. Some of this is put forward by the publishers and some of it is shaped by the already insatiable appetite for certain authors and books. Roald Dahl Day is one such day, Harry Potter Night is another. We are currently also in the position of celebrating a tradition of books that looks back to a century or more of quality literature for children, alongside a far longer literary tradition that is the envy of many nations.

Roald Dahl Day 2016 marked both kinds of celebrations, while also this year we are marking 400 years since the death of Shakespeare and 90 years of Winnie the Pooh. Which brings me to the question what book themed night would you like to celebrate or do you celebrate?
