About the Event

The Sisterhood Book Club is a friendly book club for adults discovering and rediscovering female protagonists in classic, modern classic and contemporary world fiction written by women.

We meet monthly to informally discuss a book read in advance, over refreshments at the emporium.

The cost of taking part is the purchase of the book to be discussed per month and books are available to collect a couple of months in advance. Inspired by Penguin books' Sisterhood Collection, previous books have included Anne of Green Gables, Little Women and Pride and Prejudice. More recently we have read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Out by Natsuo Kirino and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.

Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers

1957, the suburbs of South East London. Jean Swinney is a journalist on a local paper, trapped in a life of duty and disappointment from which there is no likelihood of escape. When a young woman, Gretchen Tilbury, contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. As the investigation turns her quiet life inside out, Jean is suddenly given an unexpected chance at friendship, love and - possibly - happiness. But there will, inevitably, be a price to pay.
