With the summer drifting into autumn at a snail’s pace this year, it seems a bit odd that the nights are suddenly drawing in. Post equinox, the days are shorter and long evenings spent curled up with books seem once again to be upon us (although I’m finding the thought of blanket, fire and hot chocolate a little difficult to picture just yet). I’m currently falling into this season of books by reading a fantastic winter mystery novel by Fleur Hitchcock, author of Dear Scarlett, Saving Sophia, Shrunk …  Murder in Midwinter is about Maya, who witnesses a couple arguing violently in the middle of a crowded R...

This week we celebrated Roald Dahl Day, when I say we I mean ‘we’ as a community of book lovers. Roald Dahl Day falls on 13th September every year, and is annually celebrated by schools, bookshops, libraries and individuals across the country. This year it was extra special as it also marked 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl himself.

In the current golden age of children’s literature we mark lots of days and nights that celebrate the love children and adults have for the books we are fascinated by. Some of this is put forward by the publishers and some of it is shaped by the already insatiable appeti...

The summer – at least in terms of school holidays – is drawing to a close. It seems only yesterday that I had six glorious weeks ahead of me in which to plan the next term’s school activities, and now it’s time to begin facilitating them. In addition to single projects at schools across the borough and a weekly visit to Milton Hall Primary School, this school year sees a second year of Story Bites residency at Hamstel Junior School. The residency is only for part of the week, but it allows for multiple projects to take place across the school. Each year group will have at least one Story Bites project and...

News just in: 40 new Supertatos have taken to the skies to protect us from the Evil Pea and his dastardly accomplices, while nearby fairies of all shapes and sizes have led a protest against the bossy Fairy Queen to start a fair and democratic Fairyland.

Sunshine and Stories had a crafty twist in its last two weeks, as Hannah and Jacqui brought some stories to life in a Play and Books kind of way. Last week, our wonderful Storyteller in Residence brought the books Supertato and Supertato: Veggies Assembled to life for us, and we created our own Supertatos. Everyone was really enthused when it came to the...

Sunshine and Stories at Barons Court is always fun to be a part of. This is the third school holidays that we have supported the event, and it is bigger than ever. Last week the wonderful Archie Kimpton helped us to create our own jumble creatures and scary evil story characters, as he told us about the creating and writing of the fantastically funny Jumblecat. This week it was something completely different, as we ventured outside with the fabulous zoologist, conservationist and writer Jess French.

Over 70 Minibeast Adventurers packed into the hall at Baron’s Court Primary to learn all about some of our f...
